ATHLET chisels

ATHLET chisels are highly efficient quality tools made from air-hardened chrome vanadium steel with a molybdenum addition, material no. 1.2242 (59 CrV 4), manufactured according to DIN 7255. The chisels are characterised by extra high strength and stability resulting in an extremely long tool life, which makes them ideal for use in industrial applications.

Prior to forging, the blank is heated up to a temperature of between 900 and 1.000°C. Afterwards it is stress-relieved in a special cooling process. For hardening the chisel blade, it is heated up to approx. 850°C and then quenched by an air blast. The ideal hardness for use is achieved by annealing following quenching. The special quenching and hardening treatment of the chisel head is carried out in a process with contactless monitoring at temperatures between 600 and 650 °C. Grinding after quenching and hardening is carried out with special care to ensure a long service life.

Chisel blades:

After quenching and hardening, the chisel blades have a hardness of between 54 and 58 HRC.

Handles:

Chisel handles usually remain untreated and retain their natural hardness.

Chisel heads:

The chisel heads are quenched and hardened to 38-46 HRC. The quenching and hardening treatment is to prevent splintering or the formation of burrs. The heads of ATHLET chisels are milled down to a diameter of 9 mm. This ensures that hits are optimally centred and that the hitting forces are fully transmitted to the blade.

Instructions for reworking chisels:

Regrinding is carried out by applying a slight pressure and by using water for cooling. The cutting edge must not change in colour. The chisel may be reground down to the end of the blade.
